“8,000 small business loans are declined every day by banks”

Time well spent: Have a look and listen to this impactful talk2014_10_28_Screen_Cap_video_Connie_Evans with Connie Evans, President & CEO, Association for Enterprise Opportunity in Washington DC, hosted by Bob Coleman of the Coleman Report.

Ms. Evans gives an impressive array of facts about the benefits of micro-lending (loans of up to $50,000) and micro-capital (up to $250,000) to small businesses of up to 5 employees.

Among others, she says that such businesses are declined for loans by banks at a rate of 8,000 declines per day.

8,000. Declines. Per. Day.

The opportunity to serve these underserved small business borrowers is profound.

American Dream: Former Denny’s Waitress now owns 75 locations

dennys-dawn-lafreedaLike many young people, Dawn Lafreeda started her working life at age 16. Her first job was as a hostess at a local Denny’s restaurant.

But this determined woman’s life quickly took a turn that would be instrumental in defining her success: “During college, she took on a second job at a software company, where she learned about accounting and managing personnel.” At 23, she was able to leverage her skills and burning desire to succeed to acquire a Denny’s store in Globe, Arizona. (It’s 87 miles east of Phoenix, in case you’d like to look it up).

18 months later, she was offered 4 more stores in Texas. Now, “Lafreeda has increased her empire to 75 Denny’s locations in six states, becoming the largest single-owner franchisee in the system.”

“This country was founded by risk-takers, resourceful pioneers who built this prosperous nation. Entrepreneurialism is in our heritage.”

mscMaria Contreas-Sweet was sworn in as SBA Administrator on Monday. Here are some quotes from her acceptance speech (hat-tip to Bob Coleman):

  • “The American Dream has always been about the opportunity to earn a good education and the keys to own your home. But the expanding American Dream is also about the opportunity to start your own business. I’ve lived that dream. And as the SBA Administrator, I’m determined to help others realize theirs as well.
  • SBA is a driving force that helps propel this economic activity. SBA provides access to capital, contracting opportunities, and consultation through a national network of partners, and of course, disaster relief loans.
  • Two out of three new jobs in America are created by small businesses. Millions of middle-class families are working for folks who depend on the SBA’s ability to facilitate access to capital, counseling and contracting opportunities. We must draw on technology to streamline the process of working with the SBA to make it easier for borrowers to access capital and easier for lenders to lend. The SBA must be nimble, agile to keep pace with our digital age.
